1. General instructions

These apply to every Landscape Lock application. Read them before starting your first project.

Equipment you'll need

  • Garden pressure spray bottle — preferred for most applications
  • Watering can with adjustable rose — for large areas; control flow carefully
  • Cement mixer or large flexible bucket with paddle — for slurry applications (high-traffic paths)
  • Bucket of water — store the spray nozzle tip in it during breaks
  • Measuring jugs — to load concentrate and water accurately
  • Compactor or hand tamp — for pathway applications
Tip: Clean all equipment thoroughly with water immediately after use. Landscape Lock sets into a flexible solid and is difficult to remove from spray nozzles once cured.

Mixing instructions

Spray bottle: add half the water first (stops the concentrate settling), add the concentrate, top up with the remaining water, seal and shake well.

Watering can: half the water first, add concentrate, add remaining water, then stir thoroughly with a paddle.

Slurry (mixer or bucket): pre-mix the concentrate and water in a bucket, then draw from it to coat pebbles or stone in the mixer until evenly covered.

Pre-wetting (recommended)

Lightly spray the area with clean water first. This breaks the surface tension so the mix spreads and penetrates better — and lets you test your nozzle width, volume and spray height before the real thing.

Watering can tip: tape over some of the rose holes to reduce the flow rate. Test with plain water first to find the right coverage speed.

Protecting surrounding areas

Important: Landscape Lock is hard to remove from porous surfaces once set.
  • Wet all surrounding hard surfaces (driveways, paths, stepping stones, tiles, brick borders) before applying nearby.
  • Rinse any overspray off hard surfaces immediately — never let it dry.
  • Remove spills promptly with a thoroughly wet cloth, then rinse with plenty of water.
  • Wipe overspray off plant leaves with a wet cloth and rinse clean.

Clean-up & storage

  • Rinse all equipment with water straight after use.
  • Seal the concentrate container tightly. A skin may form on the surface (like paint) — don't pour any skin into your sprayer, it will block the nozzle.
  • Pre-mixed product can be stored in a sealed bottle and is less likely to skin.

3. Decorative pebbles

3a. No foot traffic

Spray bottleDilution 1 : 42 coatsCure: 24 hrs

Stabilises decorative pebble cover (20–30 mm polished pebbles) between pavers and in garden beds. Coverage: 1–1.5 m² per litre of mix per coat (5–7.5 m² per L concentrate).

  1. Remove dirt to the required depth for your pebbles. Compact the base.
  2. Lay weed mat over the area. Dampen mat and base before application.
  3. Pre-compact pebbles by pressing down to increase stone-to-stone contact.
  4. Mix product in a garden pressure spray bottle.
  5. Spray at multiple angles until all pebbles are completely saturated.
  6. Cure undisturbed for 24 hours — protect from rain and irrigation.

3b. Occasional foot traffic (pebbles up to 30 mm)

Spray / watering canDilution 1 : 32 coatsCure: 48 hrs

A well-bonded pebble cover that handles occasional foot traffic or light scuffing. Coverage: 1 m² per litre of mix per coat (2 m² per L concentrate).

  1. Remove dirt to accommodate pebble depth. Compact the base.
  2. Lay weed mat. Dampen mat and base.
  3. Spread 50% of pebbles over the full area.
  4. Spray until fully saturated. Rake evenly.
  5. Add the remaining pebbles and spray again until fully saturated. Rake to level.
  6. Compact the area.
  7. Apply a topcoat spray over the compacted surface.
  8. Cure undisturbed for 48 hours — protect from rain and irrigation.

These are summary instructions — see the full instructions before applying: download the Application Guide (PDF).

4. Pebble pathways

4a. Medium foot traffic — spray method

Spray / watering canDilution 1 : 42 coatsCure: 48–72 hrs

Decorative pedestrian pathway for infrequent to moderate domestic foot traffic, spray-applied in layers for a natural finish. Use 9–12 mm polished pebbles (infrequent traffic) or 5–8 mm (frequent traffic). Coverage: 1 m² per litre of mix per coat.

  1. Excavate the pathway 25–40 mm below the surrounding garden level. Install metal or plastic edging.
  2. Lay weed mat. If the base is soft, excavate deeper and compact 50 mm of 20 mm road base first. Dampen before application.
  3. Spread 50% of the pebbles over the full base area.
  4. Spray until fully saturated. Rake pebbles to distribute the mix evenly and level the surface.
  5. Add the remaining 50% of pebbles and spray again until fully saturated. Rake to level.
  6. Compact firmly for a smooth, even finish.
  7. Apply a topcoat spray over the compacted surface.
  8. Cure undisturbed for 48–72 hours — protect from rain and irrigation.

4b. Medium–high foot traffic — slurry method (greater adhesion)

Cement mixer / bucketDilution 1 : 3Cure: 48–72 hrs

A domestic pathway suited to medium to medium-high foot traffic. The slurry method delivers superior adhesion and a more durable bound surface. Use 2 L of mix per 25 kg bag of 5–12 mm polished pebbles; apply 1.5–3 bags per m². For heavy foot traffic or light vehicles, use a decomposed granite pathway instead.

  1. Excavate the pathway approx. 90 mm below the surrounding garden level. Install edging.
  2. Lay weed mat over the pathway.
  3. Create a firm 50 mm base of well-compacted 20 mm road base. Dampen before application.
  4. Combine pebbles and pre-mixed solution in a cement mixer or bucket until every pebble is coated in a consistent slurry.
  5. Apply the slurry at a minimum 20 mm depth for standard traffic, or 40 mm for more demanding areas.
  6. Compact firmly for a smooth, even finish.
  7. Cure undisturbed for 48–72 hours — protect from rain and irrigation.

These are summary instructions — see the full instructions before applying: download the Application Guide (PDF).

5. Decomposed granite paths — light vehicles, bikes & heavy foot traffic

Cement mixer / bucketDilution 1 : 4Cure: 72 hrs

For golf course paths, BMX tracks, public park pathways and sand bunker slopes. Use decomposed granite / crushed stone 5–9 mm with fines. 2 L of mix per 25 kg bag; approx. 3 bags per m².

  1. Excavate the pathway 90–115 mm below the surrounding garden level. Install edging.
  2. Lay weed mat over the pathway.
  3. Create a firm 50–75 mm base of well-compacted 20 mm road base. Dampen before application.
  4. Combine stones and pre-mixed solution in a cement mixer or bucket until thoroughly coated.
  5. Apply the slurry to a minimum depth of 40 mm.
  6. Compact well with a mechanical compactor for a smooth, even finish.
  7. Cure undisturbed for 72 hours — protect from rain and irrigation.

These are summary instructions — see the full instructions before applying: download the Application Guide (PDF).

6. Care & maintenance

  • White or light-coloured pebbles may discolour over time as dust and dirt settle on the coated surface. Regular use of a garden leaf blower keeps pebbles clean.
  • Darkening on pebbles: organic growth can appear on the cured film over time. Periodically spray the treated area with a dilute bleach/water or vinegar/water solution to keep it clean.
  • After rain: avoid scuffing or disturbing treated areas when wet — water temporarily softens the bond and stones can shift under rough handling. The bond restores as it dries.
  • Cure time: always allow the full recommended cure time before foot traffic.
